Do You Need a Colonoscopy?

Everyone Needs A Colonoscopy

Colon cancer is the second most common cancer diagnosed in both men and women in the United States. Colon cancer is also the third leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men and women in the US.

Colonoscopy can prevent colon cancer by removing colon polyps, which are early abnormal growths of the lining of the colon that have the potential to slowly become colon cancer.  Colonoscopy can also hopefully find cancer when it is early, which allows more treatment options including possibly curative surgery.

At this time, recommendations are for all men and women to complete their first colonoscopy at age 45. There are reasons to complete this earlier than that, including some symptoms including rectal bleeding and family history of colon cancer or polyps. The first colonoscopy can sometimes be covered 100% by preventive health insurance benefits.

Many people worry about pain or discomfort during a colonoscopy, but our practices include IV sedation medicine that will make our patients completely comfortable and pain free during their procedure.
