There are many indications for GI related Endoscopic procedures. Please see below for further detailed information.
Colonoscopy – During a colonoscopy, you will be 100% asleep through an IV medication, and the colon is closely evaluated with a camera. All men and women should undergo colonoscopy for colon cancer screening and prevention, starting at age 45, although if you have symptoms like weight loss or rectal bleeding you may need one earlier. Also, you may need a colonoscopy earlier or more frequently if you have close family members with colon cancer or colon polyps. There is no pain associated with this procedure.
Upper Endoscopy (EGD) – During an EGD, you will also be 100% asleep, and a small camera is used to evaluate your throat (esophagus), stomach, and the beginning of your small intestine. It is important to ask about or consider upper endoscopy if you have a low blood count (anemia), GERD (heartburn/acid reflux), difficulty swallowing, and some other indications. Please ensure you let us know if these conditions affect you.
Video Capsule Endoscopy – During this procedure, you are awake and swallow a pill with a camera inside, while wearing a special Bluetooth receiver monitor and belt. You go home wearing the equipment, and bring it back to the office at the end of the day and the captured images are converted into a video and reviewed. The capsule passes out of your body naturally. The two indications for this procedure are a low blood count (anemia) with low iron, and to evaluate for Crohn's disease if you have abdominal pain and diarrhea.
